The Way of Wisdom: What God Actually Wants
What God Actually Wants | “To do what is right and just is more acceptable to the Lord than sacrifice.” — Proverbs 21:3
God Is After Alignment. Proverbs 21 gives us a statement that completely reframes what God values. Solomon says doing what is right and just is more acceptable to the Lord than sacrifice. That’s a bold statement when you remember how central sacrifice was to the worship life of Israel.
The Way of Wisdom: Plans Succeed With Counsel
Plans Succeed With Counsel | “Plans are established by seeking advice; so if you wage war, obtain guidance.” -Proverbs 20:18
Wisdom does not try to figure everything out alone. It invites counsel.
Proverbs uses the imagery of preparing for battle to make the point. If the stakes are high enough to fight for, they are high enough to seek guidance for.
The Way of Wisdom: Better With Integrity
Day 19 — Better With Integrity | “Better the poor whose walk is blameless than a fool whose lips are perverse.” -Proverbs 19:1
Throughout Proverbs, one idea keeps returning: character matters. Not reputation, not appearance, not status. Character.
Proverbs 19 reminds us that integrity is more valuable than advantage. It is better to live honestly with less than to gain more through compromise.
The Way of Wisdom: Life and Death in the Tongue
Life and Death in the Tongue | “The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit.” - Proverbs 18:21
Proverbs reminds us that our words are not small things. They carry power. They shape relationships, environments, and even the direction of our lives.
The Way of Wisdom: The Refiner’s Fire
The Refiner’s Fire | “The crucible for silver and the furnace for gold, but the Lord tests the heart.” -Proverbs 17:3
Silver becomes pure through heat. Gold is refined in a furnace where pressure exposes what doesn’t belong so that what is valuable can remain. Proverbs tells us that God does something similar with the human heart. He tests it, not to destroy it, but to refine it.
The Way of Wisdom: God Establishes the Steps
Plan and Trust | Proverbs 16 gives us a beautiful tension: “In their hearts humans plan their course, but the Lord establishes their steps.” — Proverbs 16:9
Wisdom plans. It sets direction. It takes initiative. But wisdom also trusts. You may have a vision for your life. You may have goals and timelines. And that is good. But ultimately, God establishes your steps.
The Way of Wisdom: The Power of a Timely Word
Words Create Atmosphere Proverbs 15 reminds us: “A person finds joy in giving an apt reply— and how good is a timely word!” — Proverbs 15:23
A timely word has power. It can lift a discouraged heart. It can steady someone in confusion. It can strengthen a person who feels like quitting.
The Way of Wisdom: There Is a Way That Seems Right
Not Everything That Feels Right Is Right. Proverbs 14 gives a sobering but protective reminder: “There is a way that seems right to a man, but in the end it leads to death.” — Proverbs 14:12
Seeming right and being right are not always the same thing.
The Way of Wisdom: Walk With the Wise
Proximity Produces Growth Proverbs 13 gives us a principle that is both simple and powerful: “Walk with the wise and become wise, for a companion of fools suffers harm.” — Proverbs 13:20
Who you walk with shapes who you become. Wisdom is contagious. So is foolishness.
The Way of Wisdom: The Generous Life Expands
Proverbs 11 gives us a principle that challenges natural instinct:
“One person gives freely, yet gains even more; another withholds unduly, but comes to poverty. A generous person will prosper; whoever refreshes others will be refreshed.” — Proverbs 11:24–25
Give and gain. Refresh others and be refreshed.
The Way of Wisdom: Diligence Builds
Proverbs 10 draws a clear and honest contrast: “Lazy hands make for poverty, but diligent hands bring wealth.” — Proverbs 10:4 “He who gathers crops in summer is a prudent son, but he who sleeps during harvest is a disgraceful son.” — Proverbs 10:5
There are seasons that quietly shape your future. And there are seasons you can miss without realizing what they were.
The Way of Wisdom: Coachable or Costly?
Proverbs 9:8–9 (NIV) “Do not rebuke mockers or they will hate you; rebuke the wise and they will love you. Instruct the wise and they will be wiser still; teach the righteous and they will add to their learning.”
There are two kinds of people in the world: those who resist correction and those who grow from it. The difference between them isn’t talent, intelligence, or opportunity. It’s response.
The Way of Wisdom: Wisdom Is Calling
Wisdom Is Not Silent. Proverbs 8 shifts the tone completely. Wisdom is personified, and she is not hiding in the shadows: “Does not wisdom call out? Does not understanding raise her voice? At the highest point along the way… she takes her stand.” — Proverbs 8:1–2
Temptation whispers in secret. Wisdom calls out in public.
The Way of Wisdom: Guard Your Heart Before the Moment
Store It Before You Need It Proverbs 7 says, “My son, keep my words and store up my commands within you. Keep my commands and you will live; guard my teachings as the apple of your eye.” — Proverbs 7:1–2
Store it. Guard it. Treasure it. Victory is rarely won in the moment of temptation. It’s won long before the pressure ever arrives.
The Way of Wisdom: The Slow Drift of Laziness
Look at the Ant
Right in the middle of Proverbs 6, Solomon does something unexpected. He tells us to look at an ant.
“Go to the ant, you sluggard; consider its ways and be wise! It has no commander, no overseer or ruler, yet it stores its provisions in summer and gathers its food at harvest.” — Proverbs 6:6–8
If you want wisdom, watch the ant. No applause. No spotlight. No one checking on it. Just quiet, consistent diligence.
Wisdom isn’t always dramatic. Most of the time, it looks ordinary. It looks like showing up when you don’t feel like it. It looks like preparation when no one is watching.
What Would You Do for Wisdom?
“The beginning of wisdom is this: Get wisdom. Though it cost all you have, get understanding.” — Book of Proverbs 4:7
How long do you want to stay the same? I’m not asking that to be dramatic. I’m asking because I care about you. At some point, something inside you says, “No more.” And that’s usually the moment growth actually begins.
The Way of Wisdom: Write It on the Tablet of Your Heart
“Let love and faithfulness never leave you; bind them around your neck, write them on the tablet of your heart. Then you will win favor and a good name in the sight of God and man.” — Proverbs 3:3–4. He is describing the difference between briefly agreeing with truth and actually being shaped by it.
The Way of Wisdom: If You Seek It, You’ll See It
Proverbs 2 "…if you look for it as for silver and search for it as for hidden treasure, then you will understand the fear of the Lord and find the knowledge of God.”
Here’s the truth: You will find what you are looking for.
The Way of Wisdom Prudence Is For Everyone
Proverbs begins by clarifying who wisdom is for. Proverbs 1 tells us it is for the simple, the young, the wise, and the discerning. In other words, it is for everyone.
