The Way of Wisdom: When the Fire Runs Out
Day 26 — 31 Days in Proverbs — The Way of Wisdom
When the Fire Runs Out
“Without wood a fire goes out; without a gossip a quarrel dies down.” — Proverbs 26:20
Conflict Needs Fuel
Proverbs 26 offers a simple image that explains a lot about human relationships. Fires do not continue burning without fuel, and arguments often work the same way.
Gossip, repeated stories, and constant commentary keep conflict alive. When tension gets passed from conversation to conversation, it grows larger than it ever needed to be.
But when the fuel stops, the fire begins to fade.
Solomon is reminding us that we often have more influence over conflict than we realize.
The Power of Restraint
Wisdom understands that not every conversation needs to continue and not every situation needs our commentary.
Sometimes the most powerful contribution we can make is restraint. Choosing not to repeat something. Choosing not to escalate something. Choosing not to keep a disagreement alive.
That kind of restraint requires maturity, but it protects relationships and creates space for peace.
Becoming a Peacemaker
I believe God is always looking for people who know how to calm a situation instead of inflaming it. Peacemakers bring stability into environments that could easily become chaotic.
When we refuse to feed conflict with more words, we give wisdom room to work.
And often the fire that seemed overwhelming simply burns out.
