The Way of Wisdom: Life and Death in the Tongue

Day 18 — 31 Days in Proverbs — The Way of Wisdom

Life and Death in the Tongue

“The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit.” -Proverbs 18:21

Proverbs reminds us that our words are not small things. They carry power. They shape relationships, environments, and even the direction of our lives. The things we say consistently create a kind of atmosphere around us, and over time, we begin to live inside the environment our words have produced.

When Scripture says the tongue holds the power of life and death, it means our words plant seeds. Some of those seeds bring encouragement and courage. Others create fear, criticism, or insecurity. What we say today eventually produces fruit tomorrow.

You Speak the World You Live In

Think about the environments you spend the most time in. A home can feel peaceful or tense. A team can feel encouraging or draining. A friendship can feel safe or defensive. Often, the difference is the pattern of words spoken there.

Encouragement plants courage. Faith plants possibility. Gratitude creates joy. Over time, those things grow into the culture of a relationship or community.

The opposite is also true. Words spoken carelessly can slowly weaken trust or create tension that becomes difficult to repair.

Speak With Wisdom

Wisdom understands that speech is stewardship. Words should not be rushed or thrown around casually. Instead of reacting quickly, wisdom pauses long enough to consider both truth and timing.

A thoughtful sentence can strengthen someone for years. A moment of encouragement can change the direction of someone’s day. When our words are guided by wisdom, they become tools that build rather than weapons that damage.

Choose Life

Imagine a home marked by encouragement. Imagine friendships strengthened by truth spoken with care. Imagine leadership that consistently brings clarity and hope.

Words help create those environments. And the choice of what to speak belongs to us every day.
