The Way of Wisdom: The Slow Drift of Laziness

Day 6 — 31 Days in Proverbs — The Way of Wisdom

Look at the Ant

Right in the middle of Proverbs 6, Solomon does something unexpected. He tells us to look at an ant.

“Go to the ant, you sluggard; consider its ways and be wise! It has no commander, no overseer or ruler, yet it stores its provisions in summer and gathers its food at harvest.” — Proverbs 6:6–8

If you want wisdom, watch the ant.

No applause. No spotlight. No one checking on it. Just quiet, consistent diligence.

Wisdom isn’t always dramatic. Most of the time, it looks ordinary. It looks like showing up when you don’t feel like it. It looks like preparation when no one is watching.

Small Habits, Big Outcomes

The ant prepares in one season for what is coming in another. That’s foresight. That’s prudence. That’s wisdom.

Laziness, though, rarely announces itself loudly. It whispers:

“A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest…” — Proverbs 6:10

Notice the repetition. A little. Not collapse. Not rebellion. Just a little drift.

Then comes the warning:

“And poverty will come on you like a thief and scarcity like an armed man.” — Proverbs 6:11

Small neglect compounds. So does small discipline.

We become what we repeatedly do.

Discipline Is Protection

We tend to think discipline restricts us, but in reality it protects us. When you build small daily disciplines, you prevent future desperation. When you address responsibilities early, you avoid crises later.

Wisdom understands that today’s habits build tomorrow’s reality.

This isn’t just about work. It’s about your spiritual life. Your marriage. Your leadership. Your health. Your calling.

You don’t wake up strong. You build strength quietly, one faithful decision at a time.

Don’t Drift Into Regret

Laziness isn’t always obvious inactivity. Sometimes it looks like delay. Sometimes it looks like distraction. Sometimes it looks like avoiding what you already know you need to face.

So here’s a better question for today: What small step can I take that my future self will thank me for?

A little discipline today prevents a lot of regret tomorrow. The difference between stability and struggle is often consistency.

And wisdom is built in the small things.
